This volume of the James Asher series heads to Russia, circaand the quest to stop Kaiser Wilhelm from acquiring day-walking vampires as pre-WWI tensions continue to rise. One incidental annoyance – I did think the quickness of the conversion to vampire and the almost instantaneous attainment of vampiric abilities was unbelievable, you would think there would be a period of debilitating weakness either until having fed properly or slept and allowed the body time to fully convert, but that is a minor quibble.

But he has no more information — the vampire who wrote to warn him of such a possibility has disappeared. I have another one in this series to read and if it is the same plot, then I won’t bother finishing it. These are books about love and death, extremely vivid windows into a past so real you can feel it around you as you read. The combination of Hambly’s meticulous historical research, intricate plotting, three vibrant characters and Hambly’s talent for making the night seem perilous makes for a great vampire story.

Because of a change in publishers, I only recently became aware that there were more books in this series. I like the way Barbara Hambly presents her vampires.

War is coming, and according to one of the vampires of St. Her grasp of history is sure and faultless. St Petersburg is also the last known location of a lady vampire who holds a dear place in what remains of Don Simon’s heart. But he can not travel without assistance, not without safe places to pass the day.

But is Don Ysidro interested in keeping the secrets of vampires safe, or is he really interested in saving his former love, Lady Irene, who has warned Ysidro of the Kaiser’s interest, and now seems to have disappeared. I understand that the characters, British and Russian people a few years before the first world war, would have their well founded prejudices against Germans.

So, what can one say without it being a spoiler for earlier books. Dresden is a city resplendent of baroque architecture and chuck full with art collections and theatres – how it would be snubbed when Prague is glorified is beyond me. Let us not forget Lydia, aka Mrs James Asher, bpood of blood diseases. This is not a raunchy vampire series.
