A high point is that the text ends with a rigorous treatment of the serious and magical results of Cantor on cardinality in addition to the Schroeder-Bernstein theorem. Luiz Gustavo rated it really liked it Jan 14, But how do we know it is true? Click here to find out. Because of the content, this pdoof passes the longevity test.

Relations, Functions and Cardinality. Depending on your Internet connection, the file may fail to open. Until this point in your education, you may hammqck regarded mathematics primarily as a computational discipline.
A reversing of the order of Chapters 2 and 3 is also something I would recommend. Yeah, seriously, maths really does mess with your head.
This book is an introduction to that realm.
Mar 08, hyacinth rated it it was amazing. It is a bridge from the computational courses such as calculus or differential equations that students ha,mack encounter in their first year of college to a more abstract outlook. I am deviating a bit this semester from the given order, but the book makes this easily doable, prlof it is still well organized even with the order mixed up a bit.
Likewise, the perfect number theorem’s proof felt like a jump too high for many students so if time is pressing hammaxk could opt to postpone these topics in Chapters 7 and 8 respectively. From the complete beginner as in my case, I only had highschool algebra with some non-rigorously, self-taught compsci to the more proficient, if you don’t feel confident with proofs, Hammack has your back.

The book’s structure definitely allows for these sorts of easy changes. The book is consistent in its use of definitions, diagrams, and terminology. At that job, it is the best book available. Getting over that, I’m assuming anyone who would look at this book would know what to expect from it. My decisions regarding revisions were guided by the Amazon reviews and emails hamamck readers. The students are all prospective middle and high school teachers, and the main goals are to prepare them for upper level mathematics courses involving proofs, and to give them a brief introduction to discrete mathematics.

He works mostly in the areas of combinatorics and graph theory. Topics include ricbard, logic, counting, methods of conditional and non-conditional proof, disproof, induction, relations, functions, calculus proofs and infinite cardinality. The online interface is a plain pdf that appears just as you would expect from the hardcopy. I highly recommend any transition-to-proof or introduction-to-proof course be taught with this textbook. It will be well worth the effort. In this setting, your primary goal in using mathematics has been to compute answers.

The material on cardinality at the end of the book is nice. Comments I have taught using this textbook in an introduction-to-proofs course over four semesters, and I am in general very satisfied with it.
That’s not the book’s fault. Table of Contents Chapter 1: The examples used are from mathematics and largely devoid of references to any particular culture or background. So – it is vacuously highly culturally relevant.
There is certainly enough here for a full semester’s work. The topics are presented in a clear fashion with themes in each section clearly stated and how one sections theme builds upon previously developed themes.
