Le diable amoureux
This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Alvaro senses that his virginity is in peril and he begins a long journey back to his mother, who is the only protective force to guard him from a night of hot passion. On his way back toward the womb, Alvaro is deflowered in a fallen coach by the side of the nacques.
He returns to his mother a mere carcass of the calla lily he used to be. I am currently on a devil-reading spree to find out: Or might we find instances in which his seemingly male desires are relayed in feminine terms? Un compitino ben jacque ma senza pretese. Direi un sei politico. That was somewhat disappointing. Any story where a Devil or Death turn up in human form, tends to be pretty awesome. Thats an aesthetic or plot-point or whatever that i quite enjoy. This however was fairly bland given the setup.
I’m absolutely sure its losing something in the translation but it can’t be losing THAT much. One issue plot wise is that the protagonist is constantly trying not to sleep with this woman, because it would be dishonorable or something. Ok, thats a little strange given th That was somewhat disappointing.
Ok, thats a little strange given this is written by a french guy and given the time period when things were a little more liberal. I was thinking our hero is spanish so maybe this is a commentary on the spanish being more uptight than the french, but then diiable clearly sleeps with a lot of other women!
So the rule seems to be its only wrong to sleep with someone if there’s a chance you casotte marry them later? Anyway, this story just lee did enough with the supernatural elements, it never created that air of wrongness that you usually have in these kinds of stories and frankly the ending was very anti-climactic. I guess it sounds like i’m completely trashing it but its still ok but far below my expectations.

Fun but it falls short of being -something.
It’s no The Manuscript Found in Saragossa.
A fun read but not as memorable as Lewis’s “The Monk. This version is a scan of an jjacques English translation of the French novel. As such it has the original font, including that pesky long “s”, which occasionally made it hard to resist the temptation to hear the tale narrated with a terrible lisp. An early work of fantasy, the protagonist Alvare summons ddiable Devil himself and realizing that this arrangement makes him the master, forces it to assume the shape of a gorgeous woman who then can’t help but fall in love with him.
Of jacquss lots of no This version is a scan of an early Amourfux translation of the French novel. Of course lots of noise could be made of the implications of how falling in love with this woman who actually is Satan almost ruins Alvare’s life. But also interesting is Alvare’s militant determination to maintain his virginity until after a marriage, his obsession with maintaining his “honor”.
Also interesting is his knowing that she is evil-incarnate he can’t help but love her for the most superficial reasons.
There’s lots of room for rereading to find different levels of meaning, some of which may be unexpected. After all, this was written back in the heyday of transgressive French literature. Even if it is a perfectly chaste morality tale it certainly has lots of food for thought and interpretation both contextually and otherwise. If I go back to it though I will try to find a version with modern font and maybe some interesting commentary to accompany it.

Jul 18, Amandine rated it liked it Shelves: This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. Celle-ci est un peu morale, mais pas trop. A plusieurs moments je me suis dite “mais qu’est ce que je suis en train de lire? This was fun, though I did not finish it, because I was reading it in French and my French is only so good.
But I got through the first half and found it a real treat. A dramatic, campy, delightful 18th-century escapade. Franse gothic op z’n best. Prachtige vertaling van Versteeg.
This would really be a fantastic text to study in terms of gender identity. Yeah, I said it. A good book but the last chapter just ruins it. His first attempts, a mock romance and a coarse song, gained so much popularity, both in the Court and among the people, that he was encouraged to try something more ambitious. He accordingly produced his romance, Les Prouesses inimitables d’Ollivier, marquis d’Edesse. He also wrote a number of fantastic oriental tales, such as his Mille et une fadaises, Contes a dormir debout His first success was with a “poem” in twelve cantos, and in prose intermixed with verse, entitled Ollivier cazitte vols, followed in by another romance, the Lord Impromptu.
But the most popular of his works was the Diable amoureuxa fantastic tale in which the hero raises the devil. The value of the story lies in the picturesque setting, and the skill with which its details are carried out.
