End of an Era. They aren’t the same species, and the story focuses almost entirely on the “good” one. The shark doing the camouflaging and hoovering is an Angel shark, eating a Horned shark.
Always haldemman seeks to better understand humanity and along the way to try to find one of its own kind or to learn of its own history the length of its life so long that it forgot its own identity in being ocean creatures.
If gender isn’t the central concern of this novel, it’s near the center, and the handling of it is skillful, subtle, and finely jle. Even with its promising start, somewhere along the line, this project fell apart.
It’s like old bread. Meanwhile in a salvage company discovers a strange artifact that had been buried deep beneath the ocean floor. Haldeman’s good, but this haldemman one of his standout books.

The Chameleon was another alien a different species who had lived on Earth for millions of years. The rest of the book moves slowly and bores to frustration.
A team of scientists is assembled to study the artifact, but it proves to be impenetrable. I absolutely loved this book and read it in just one day. But eager to learn.
And then it gets to the end, which is not only anticlimatic and rushed, but it has this ridiculous romance plot Haldeman cannot write romance from either a queer or female perspective, and it helps sink the last third of this novel.

As their parallel trajectories through modern history bring them to the near-future that is the story’s present day, they converge on the experiments in Fiji. The End of All Things 1: Camouflage jo an addictive read, one of the strangest love stories around. I guess I should have been clued in by the cover referring to it as a “thriller,” a halseman best left, in my opinion, for air travel.
Meanwhile, two alien beings are on Earth – and have been for untold time, changing their shape, way damouflage being – and largely unaware of who and what they are.
And though we’re told it has been living among humans since the stone age, we really don’t know why it loves to kill. Two aliens have wandered Earth for centuries. The artifact proves difficult to move, as it is possibly three times as dense as plutoniumbut they bring it to the beach and build a wall around it.
It develops a conscience and begins to treat humans with respect and forbearance, with restraint. Jack wants to use Russell’s team as camouflage, because all he really cares about is getting the object — for himself. The team plunges the artifact into different atmospheres — specifically, those of the planets and moons of our Solar System — in case the object might recognize one of them as “home-like” and respond.
